Breaking Update on Bargaining and Parent Support
Aug. 28 – BREAKING UPDATE ON BARGAINING
Today the BCTF and BCPSEA lead negotiators met with Labour Mediator Vince Ready to discuss recent developments and explore the prospects for full mediation.
Following the meeting, Mr. Ready asked the full bargaining committees for both sides to meet with him Friday afternoon.
Aug. 27 – UPDATE ON BARGAINING
Minister of Education Peter Fassbender met with the BCTF and BCPSEA lead negotiators.
During the meeting Minister Fassbender proposed three steps to reach a settlement and clear the way for schools to start on schedule.
He asked the parties to set aside the matter of potential grievances stemming from Justice Griffin’s decision, he urged them to get into mediation as soon as possible, and he asked them to voluntarily suspend all strike or lockout activities for two weeks when Mr. Ready starts mediation.

Aug. 26 – UPDATE ON PARENT SUPPORT
If the labour disruption continues into September, the Ministry of Children and Family Development will be providing Supported Child Development funding to cover in-school hours for families with special needs children currently accessing services.
All contracted agencies that deliver Supported Childhood Development supports to families with children with special needs are being informed.
Lower income parents who currently receive child care subsidies from the Ministry of Children and Family Development are eligible to continue receiving the full-day subsidy rate until school re-opens.
Aug. 15 – UPDATE ON BARGAINING
The parties have completed 71 bargaining sessions as well as several earlier exploratory discussions with third parties.
Mediator Vince Ready has agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive.
Both parties have agreed they will not engage in public discussion on the details of bargaining pending further discussions with Mr. Ready.
